Over the last few years it has become easier to travel  to Pula. There are many airlines now flying direct especially in the summer months and there has been considerable  improvement in the main Y road that goes to Pula. It is expected that  the duel carriage way will be partly opened in 2010 and complete in 2011.

Travelling to Pula by getting to Pula by road

There are 2 main approaches to Istria , the first is from the West and central Europe. Coming though Slovenia you will cross the  border on one of three road border crossings, Plovanija - Secovlje, Kastel - Dragonja or Pozane - Socerga. The second way, from the east  is via Rijeka and the tunnel at Ucka. The main road in Istria is called  Istrian Y road and it is a semi highway. There have been vast improvements in the last 2 years  and it is now possible to go from one end of Istria, Premantura to the other Umag in about 1 hour. If you are planning a road trip from England, then the easiest way is from Calais , into Germany, down through northern Italy, - Slovenia and then Croatia.  Behind the wheel driving  takes 16 - 18 hours of continuous driving not stopping so be prepared. I find the best way is with 2 drivers and a stop overnight in Germany to rest , The total travel time is then from Calais to Pula  aprox 28 - 30 hours
